Like so much of the other plastic in my Golf, the door control piece has become brittle and has broken. I can’t pull it to close the door any more or I will pull the whole assembly out of the door. This replacement process looks just about idiot proof, but where will I get the new bezel? Junkyard? I’ve never done the junkyard thing before. Can one be ordered?

I don’t know, is it me or are a LOT of newer VWs built with a lot less quality than they used to be...? Not trying to start a flame-war or anything, but I see a lot of fairly new VWs with a surprising amount of rust and broken plastic for their comparitively young age...is it just me?

Well, to be fair, this car is almost 15 years old. All the glue inside has given up (but that could very well be from 15 years of cigar smoke), the plastic has become brittle, lots of niggling little things are broken. But when I was car shopping recently, I went to the VW dealer and looked at a new Jetta and I was thoroughly unimpressed. It seemed very plastic-y inside, it wasn’t terribly comfortable. I would say it was austere, but that may be a desired German character trait. It was just absolutely nothing to be excited about. I told the salesman that, and the interview was over.

This happened to my Volvo. There’s a little covered well where the screw that holds it in lives, and the bottom broke out of it somehow. I lived with it for a few years, but then my shop got annoyed with it (or thought they broke it and were trying to hide it?) and just drilled a new screw in through the cover. Slightly uglier, but only if you are looking into the handhold, and the cover has worked fine. Doesn’t look like that’s really an option for this one. Seems like a part you could grab at a pick and pull or something.

ECS Tuning is the “easy” option. https://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Gol…
But, the bezel itself may not be your problem. The doorcard has a reinforced bar which ties back to the door panel. Your problem may lie there. Then, this is what you need: https://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Gol…
Edit: I only suggest getting it new because anything you find in a ‘yard is gonna be fatigued already.

eBay
, believe it or not. It’s non-OEM, but it’s a new part. This isn’t the only one listed on eBay, either.
I’ve had decent luck with non-OEM cosmetic pieces before. At $13, I’d give it a shot.

Hmm. It looks like I may need to do a little digging to see what’s up. But you’re right, I think that if it were just the bezel, I would still be able to pull the handle without yanking the whole bezel out of the door, which is what’s happening. Thanks for the links.

Vargas had some good information about this. I need to dig a little bit and see exactly what is happening. But now that I know how to take it off, I can see of the underlying structure is broken, or just the bezel.

That’s great to know. I need it in gray, though. But at this point, any color will do. Thanks for the link!

Indeed. Here she is, from fall Fall 2014. Now that we’ve got my wife’s new 2013 Civic , I’m going to give the old gal a little love (the car, that is, and I suppose my wife, too). My wife used to DD the Golf, but then with winter, and the blend door that doesn’t let any heat in the cabin, she started driving the Odyssey to work. Now the Odyssey will sit unless we have family trips. For all the stuff that doesn’t work in the car, I still love driving it. It’s got an oil leak, a coolant leak (probably the heater core), and lots of tired plastic inside. Some of it I can fix, some will be left alone. I haven’t been able to open the glove box in years. I have no idea what is inside. The headliner is held up with staples, and I may go ahead and have that fixed. But I think the styling has held up very well, and it still looks good 15 years after it was born.It still has the original hubcaps and original clutch after 217k miles. Unless something terminal happens, I’ll be keeping it for a while. Perhaps my 13-year-old will learn to drive stick on it. I learned on an 82 Rabbit.
